Friendsgiving has quickly emerged as one of my absolute favorite holiday traditions. It encapsulates everything I adore about a traditional Thanksgiving feast, but with a wonderfully relaxed twist: it’s celebrated among cherished friends!

Imagine a day filled with delicious food, plenty of laughter, perhaps a few engaging games, and most importantly, the warmth of good company. It’s an opportunity to create new memories and strengthen bonds with those who brighten your life.

The Ultimate Guide to Hosting an Unforgettable Friendsgiving

Friendsgiving offers a unique and cherished way to gather during the holiday season. It’s more than just a meal; it’s a celebration of friendship and gratitude that often feels less formal and more intimate than a traditional family Thanksgiving. If you’re ready to embark on this heartwarming tradition, you’ve come to the right place. Let’s explore how to make your Friendsgiving an event to remember.

But Really, What Exactly is Friendsgiving?

I like to describe Friendsgiving as a fun, Thanksgiving-style gathering with your closest friends, offering a delightful alternative to the often more structured get-together with family and relatives. At its core, it’s beautifully simple: Thanksgiving + Friends = Friendsgiving!

Typically, this festive occasion is held one or two weeks either before or after the official Thanksgiving holiday. This flexible timing allows everyone to participate without conflicting with existing family plans. It’s usually a more casual and laid-back affair, which is precisely why it’s so appealing to many – less pressure, more pure enjoyment.

We all know that the holiday season tends to get incredibly busy for everyone. The end of the year brings a flurry of celebrations, from Halloween to Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Christmas, and New Year’s – all packed into a relatively short timeframe. Coordinating schedules and getting everyone together on the same day can sometimes feel like an impossible feat. That’s why Friendsgiving, with its inherent flexibility, is such a brilliant concept.

So, to truly make it happen and ensure a successful gathering, there’s one golden rule you absolutely must follow:

Plan ahead!

Now, when I say “plan,” I’m not suggesting you organize an elaborate, high-stress party with fancy decorations and meticulously arranged centerpieces. (Unless, of course, that’s genuinely your style and what brings you joy!)

Instead, I’m talking about fostering a truly authentic, “real-life” Friendsgiving experience. This means a fun, relaxed party where friends contribute their favorite dishes in a potluck style, where simple candles and pumpkins suffice as charming seasonal decorations, and where the entire day is genuinely centered around the joy of reconnecting and expressing gratitude for each other’s friendship. It’s about togetherness, shared meals, and creating lasting memories without the fuss. Let’s make this happen!

Top 10 Essential Tips for Hosting the Best Friendsgiving Ever!

While Friendsgiving is fundamentally about savoring quality time with your friends, hosting any party can sometimes become a bit overwhelming. These practical tips are designed to help you organize a fun, stress-free event, allowing you to relax and fully enjoy the company of your loved ones.

1. Pick a Date Early

The holiday season is notoriously busy for everyone, making early coordination crucial. Aim to pick a date that works for the majority of your friends as soon as possible. Utilize free online scheduling tools like Xoyondo to send out a poll, allowing everyone to vote for their preferred date. Alternatively, create a simple Google spreadsheet with potential dates and have guests mark their availability. Remember, it’s not always possible for every single person to make it, so don’t let perfect attendance stress you out. Focus on gathering your core group.

2. Celebrate While Giving Back

Transform your Friendsgiving gathering into a meaningful opportunity to give back during the holiday season. This year, Honeysuckle White and Shady Brook Farms have partnered with No Kid Hungry to combat childhood hunger across the country. Turning your Friendsgiving into an easy fundraiser can create a profound impact on countless lives.

Just $1 can help provide up to 10 meals for hungry children. Imagine the collective impact if every friend at your Friendsgiving gathering contributed just $5 or $10! Every single contribution, no matter how small, truly counts. Consider signing up to host your Friendsgiving for No Kid Hungry. When you register, you’ll receive a fun toolkit, a personalized webpage, and access to valuable online resources to maximize your Friendsgiving’s philanthropic potential.

3. Create a Comprehensive Sign-Up List

Expecting one person to prepare all or most of the food for Friendsgiving is unrealistic and frankly, not in the spirit of a shared celebration. To avoid duplication and ensure a diverse spread, create a detailed sign-up list of needed items and dishes. A Google spreadsheet works wonderfully for this, allowing everyone to see what’s already covered. Clearly categorize suggestions to guide your guests:

  • Main Dishes & Proteins: Offer the turkey (often prepared by the host), but consider asking for additional protein options if you have a large group.
  • Appetizers: Encourage guests to bring light bites to nibble on before the main feast.
  • Vegetable Side Dishes: From roasted greens to casseroles, these are essential.
  • Carb Side Dishes: Think stuffing, mashed potatoes, dinner rolls, or sweet potato dishes.
  • Desserts: Pies, cookies, cakes – a variety is always welcome!
  • Drinks: Specify wine, beer, sparkling water, or suggest a fun, signature cocktail.
  • Supplies: Don’t forget non-food items like eco-friendly disposable plates and napkins (for easier cleanup), extra silverware, ice, or even serving utensils if you anticipate needing more.

4. Be Mindful of Dietary Restrictions

The last thing you want is for a guest to feel excluded from your Friendsgiving feast. Make it a point to ask your invitees about any dietary restrictions or allergies well in advance. This allows you to plan accordingly and ensure there are delicious options available for everyone. Consider common needs such as vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, or specific food allergies. A simple note on your sign-up sheet or a direct message can make all the difference, making every guest feel truly welcome and cared for.

5. Be Aware of Your Hosting Space

With each guest potentially bringing a dish or an item to share, your home’s available space becomes a key consideration. Think critically about your counter space for serving, refrigerator space for chilling, and oven space for reheating. Before your friends arrive, clear and organize these areas. This way, you can easily direct guests on where to place their contributions, ensuring a smooth and organized flow throughout the evening.

6. The Slow Cooker and Instant Pot Are Your Best Friends

If you’re taking on the glorious task of roasting the turkey, you’ll likely find your oven space quite limited. (Unless you’re lucky enough to have two ovens, in which case, I’m officially jealous!). This is where versatile appliances like slow cookers and Instant Pots truly shine. Many classic Thanksgiving sides – such as creamy mashed potatoes, savory stuffing, or comforting sweet potato casserole – can be perfectly prepared or kept warm in these devices. Don’t let your oven be the sole workhorse; put your other kitchen gadgets to good use!

7. Have To-Go Containers Ready

It’s almost a given that there will be a generous abundance of leftovers after any Friendsgiving celebration. Be prepared by having a stack of to-go containers ready to distribute. This prevents you from being overwhelmed with all the remaining food and ensures your guests can enjoy delicious meals for days to come. You can either purchase some eco-friendly disposable containers or simply ask your friends to bring their own reusable containers to take home their goodies at the end of the night.

8. Create a Festive Party Atmosphere!

You don’t need to spend a fortune to host a fantastic Friendsgiving. The key is to create a welcoming and comfortable ambiance that helps everyone feel relaxed and celebratory. Set the mood with a curated background music playlist, perhaps some warm jazz or festive folk. Light scented candles throughout your home to fill the air with inviting aromas. Decorate with charming mini pumpkins and gourds, readily available this time of year, or incorporate cozy throws and pillows. Whatever simple touches make you feel good and reflect the spirit of the season will undoubtedly make your guests feel right at home.

9. Include Fun Games and Activities

After everyone has enjoyed the feast and perhaps helped with a bit of cleanup, keep the energy and camaraderie flowing by transitioning to some fun games. A simple deck of cards, classic board games, dominoes, charades, or even modern party games can spark laughter and friendly competition. If your game collection is sparse, don’t hesitate to ask friends if they have any favorites they could bring along. One of my personal favorites is Monikers – it’s incredibly easy to learn and I guarantee it will have everyone laughing hysterically in no time!

10. Don’t Stress – Embrace the Joy!

Hosting a party can easily become overwhelming if you allow perfectionism to take over. Remember the true essence of Friendsgiving: it’s a celebration of friendship, love, togetherness, and the wonderful spirit of giving back. Minor mishaps are inevitable, but they rarely detract from the overall joy when shared with good company. Focus on enjoying the process and the presence of your friends, and your Friendsgiving will naturally be a beautiful success.

My Real-Life Friendsgiving: A Celebration of Giving and Friendship!

I recently had the pleasure of hosting my very own Friendsgiving in support of No Kid Hungry, proudly partnered with Honeysuckle White and Shady Brook Farms, and it was an absolutely wonderful experience! I chose to keep the gathering small and intimate, inviting just a few of my dearest friends. Everyone enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to donate what they could to help end childhood hunger, understanding that even a small contribution, like the cost of a cup of coffee, could make a significant difference. It was truly a heartwarming testament to how even a modest group can create a powerful impact.

Appetizers were kept wonderfully simple and effortless – primarily a vibrant meat and cheese board, complemented by a few other easy-to-nibble snacks, perfect for guests to enjoy while the star turkey finished roasting to perfection in the oven.

The evening was filled with an abundant flow of wine, craft beer, and, much to everyone’s delight, plenty of playful attention from my cats!

As is often the case, my husband John took charge of the music selection, expertly curating the perfect playlist, always with a refreshing beer in hand. He’s incredibly talented at setting the right mood!

When I asked him to pose for a quick test shot so I could adjust my camera settings, this was immediately the humorous stance he adopted. You’ve got to appreciate his flair for the dramatic, haha!

And then, I handed him the camera to capture me taking the beautiful turkey out of the oven. This is the candid (and comically angled!) photo he managed to snap. Keep in mind, he’s 6’6″, which certainly explains the unique perspective, hahaha.

My decorations were intentionally minimal yet charming. I repurposed a simple gray table runner I already owned. You can elevate your own event by signing up to host Friendsgiving for No Kid Hungry, presented by Honeysuckle White and Shady Brook Farms, to receive your very own fun hosting kit that includes festive decorations!

The only new items I acquired were a few extra candles to scatter around the table, some adorable mini pumpkins for a touch of autumnal charm, and some stylish fall-colored checkerboard napkins I discovered at Marshall’s. Simple touches, big impact!

There was such an abundance of incredible food, and I was so grateful that everyone was able to take home delicious leftovers. Honestly, I couldn’t have wished for a more perfect or heartwarming Friendsgiving celebration!
